Overcoming Socioeconomic Barriers in Hiring and Retention

Dustin Moore and Carrie Neis will speak about the barriers individuals with a history of incarceration face in seeking employment after their release. Carrie will speak about the role of the Douglas County Kansas Sheriff’s Office Reentry Services in supporting individuals in gaining employment.  This includes housing and recovery supports.  She will discuss how they partner with organizations like Artists Helping the Homeless (AHH). Dustin will speak about the work of AHH and how they support individuals exiting incarceration and the unique challenges they face based on his lived experiences.

Learning objectives: Attendees of this session will learn how these programs can support and assist their organizations with recruitment and retention efforts as well as how individuals with a history of incarceration will support organizational goals of increased diversity and inclusion.

Speaker Biography:

Dustin Moore - I am currently the community manager for Artists Helping the Homeless in Lawrence. I spent my early 20's and all of my 30's addicted to meth, homeless, as well as in and out of county jail. I eventually got sentenced to 1 year in prison at Larned Correctional Facility. I was released on November 25^th 2019, and paroled to the Artists Helping the Homeless program that I currently manage. Since my release I have worked for this organization for almost 4 years, achieved almost 5 years of sobriety, got married, and have 2 step children, one of which I will be legally adopting in the near future.

Carrie Neis -  Carrie Neis has worked for Douglas County for more than 4 years, currently serving as the Reentry Director for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. In her role, Carrie leads a team of case managers that work to transition individuals exiting incarceration to a path to recovery. This work requires close partnerships with community human service agencies to ensure clients can overcome barriers to accessing housing, employment, and recovery oriented activities that may prevent future interactions with the criminal justice system. Carrie has led projects that represent new and creative approaches to serving clients, including the partnership with Artists Helping the Homeless, which started in 2019. Carrie has worked in the field of criminal justice for 11 years serving in probation, corrections and re-entry. She obatained her Master's degree of Criminal Justice from Washburn University.
