From Gut Feelings to Good Data:

A Practical Introduction to HR Analytics

HR professionals collect more data than ever, but few feel confident turning that data into
decisions. This session bridges that gap. Designed for HR practitioners with little or no analytics
experience, this interactive session demystifies HR analytics by focusing on practical, everyday
applications. Participants will learn to recognize when a business question calls for data, choose
the right analytic approach, and interpret results with confidence — no statistics degree required.

Learning Objectives:
After completing this session, participants will be able to:

1. Identify common HR business questions that can be addressed through data analysis rather than intuition alone.
2. Match appropriate analytic techniques (e.g., descriptive statistics, correlation, regression group comparisons) to specific HR decision-making scenarios.
3. Interpret analytic output to draw defensible, evidence-based conclusions for stakeholder communication.
4. Evaluate the quality and limitations of HR data to avoid common pitfalls in analytic reasoning (e.g., confusing correlation with causation, small sample issues, selection bias).

Patrick Downes is an award-winning teacher and researcher at the KU School of Business. His
research in the top academic journals have received international recognition in the areas of
human resource management, HR analytics, employee compensation and motivation. He has
taught a wide variety of HR courses at the undergraduate, MBA, and PhD levels. He earned his
undergraduate degree in Business Administration from KU and graduate degrees from Iowa
State University and the University of Iowa.
