Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events

C.R.A.S.E. Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events
Learning Objectives:
- The history of active shooters
- The Avoid, Deny, Defend plan for survival
- What to expect when the police arrive
This course is designed to take the student through a historical review of active shooter events over the last 20 years. We will look at lessons learned from a police perspective as well as the perspective of survivors. The course will discuss a plan (Avoid, Deny, Defend) to survive and buy time until the police can arrive on scene. This course will also look at expectations when the police arrive, and things to consider after the initial event.
Supporting Mental Health in the Workplace
Nicole Rials, Bert Nash Mental Health Center
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Lite will provide an overview of the MHFA program, an international program designed to engage conversation and teach individuals how to respond to someone who is having a mental health crisis. This program will discuss the Bert Nash CMHC initiative to offer this public education program which helps to aid friends, neighbors, family and co-workers when needed. In addition, the program will provide information on crisis services in the Douglas County community, and the value of offering mental health support in the workplace following a workplace crisis or sentinel event.
About Our Speakers
Captain Troy Squire has been with the Lawrence Police Department since September of 1996. He graduated from the Lawrence Police Department’s 16th Basic Recruit Academy. In 1999 he was assigned to the Douglas County Drug Enforcement Unit as a narcotics investigator. In 1999, he was also assigned to the Lawrence Police Department’s Crisis Response Team. In 2004 he was promoted to Detective, and in 2006 he was promoted to Sergeant. As a Sergeant he was assigned to supervise the drug enforcement unit, the investigations division, one of the crisis response teams, and numerous patrol shifts. In 2017 he was promoted to Captain and assigned to the patrol division. Captain Squire currently serves as Captain over day shift patrol, and is responsible for the department’s active shooter preparedness.
Nicole Rials is the Director of Urgent Care Programs at the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center. She began working in the field of mental health in 1995. Nicole holds a Master’s degree in Social Welfare and is a Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker (LSCSW). She has worked in the Lawrence Community as a private practitioner and through collaboration with local agencies. Her clinical focus has been on both child and adult populations and include the areas of crisis, trauma, hospice, suicide assessment and intervention. Additionally, Nicole has great interest and experience with building interface and collaboration between mental health services and Law Enforcement.
